The Dream

My Dream

I dream of a small cozy house overlooking the Black Sea. I see myself living with, and married to, a beautiful young lady. Our cozy little home also overlooks the wonderful city of Yalta, in Ukraine. Of course, my lady will want to travel and see other countries like America, as well as France and England.

In my dream I do not see much work, because I heard that if you love what you're doing, then you'll never have to work a day in your life.

I love music and travel. I love to listen as well as perform. I see in my dream, lands, beautiful lands so far away, that can only be described by sound, for words will fall short. Those people, from all of those far away places, express their language differently, but we all dance to the same songs.

Maybe the world will be a better place when people start expressing their dreams. That is part of my dream, to “DO”. I can dream a light bigger than the moon, but if nothing is done, I live a life of darkness.

I hope someone out there has a dream they want to share. It is time we start lighting the world with all of our hopes and dreams.

I know I am not alone.

We all sing a different tune, but our hearts are in the same place. - Gary Ruff, the dreamer

Peace Out

PS My comment to this “Song Singoff”?

There's a Hendrix version of the SGT. Peppers song too, and U2.
How's your version coming along? (yes you). :) DO! (Hint: I'm your friend.)

(a little help):

Give it a try, I double dog dare ya!

Words on video

Lyrics:

Quote,

"What would you do if I sang out of tune,
Would you stand up and walk out on me.

Lend me your ears and I’ll sing you a song,
And I’ll try not to sing out of key.

I get by with a little help from my friends,
I get high with a little help from my friends,
I’m gonna try with a little help from my friends.

What do I do when my love is away.
(Does it worry you to be alone)
How do I feel by the end of the day
(Are you sad because you’re on your own)
No I get by with a little help from my friends,
I get high with a little help from my friends,
Oh, I’m gonna try with a little help from my friends.

Do you need anybody,
I need somebody to love.
Could it be anybody
I want somebody to love.

Would you believe in love at first sight,
Yes I’m certain that it happens all the time.
What do you see hen you turn out the light,
I can’t tell you, but I know it’s mine.

Oh I get by with alittle help from my friends.
I get high with a little help from my friends,
Oh I’m gonna try with a little help from my friends.

Do you need anybody,
I just need somebody to love,
Could it be anybody,
I want somebody to love.

Oh I get by with a little help from my friends,
Mm I’m gonna try with a little help from my friends,
Oh I get high with a little help from my friends,
Yes I get by with a little help from my friends. “

Power - Computer Musician

If you are a computer musician you will want to always have a source of power for your musical instrument (the computer).

On the road I bring with me a 500 watt Power Inverter. I plug one end into the cigarette lighter of my car (12 volt DC) and the laptop into the inverter (120 volt AC). I would think you could get by on less wattage than I use, but it is much MUCH better to have more power than you need.

Once you get the volume cranked up, the hard drives spinning and your music program testing the limits of your CPU, you'll be glad you had the extra power. A 1000 watt inverter would be great too.

Which, by the way, brings me to a dilemma that computer musicians will face in the future; power for their instrument. On this same day, I wrote an article that deals with "alternative energy". The reason for this was to get the word out to my fellow musicians that we often take for granted the one thing we need most: Electricity.

In years to come, our laptops will be powered by alcohol, rather than a battery. But if you have a full studio to power up, then it might be worth while to have a back up plan. Guitarists can always pick up an acoustic guitar. Drummers, and quite frankly all other musicians, seem to have the luxury of being able to make music with or without electricity. Computer Musicians must have electrical power, and some back up plan.

So, if your interested in more than just buying a power inverter and running off the motor of your car, then put your headphones down and see what we have cooked up for your power needs.

PS I do use a European power converter when I am overseas. They cost about 30 dollars at Wal-Mart. I use a 1500 watt DC to AC power inverter when I am DJ'ing and running a karaoke monitor (that's cutting it close). My article on "Alternative Energy" includes making power from SOUND. It is an interesting read!
Alternative Energy Freaks

I am an "Alternative Energy Freak". I love the thought, ideas, and possibilities of science. I thirst for the knowledge of our past, melded with the knowledge of today, and shaping this towards our future. No idea is without any merit. I remember a time when man said "... if a man were suppose to fly, then he would be born with wings". I guess the Wright Brothers missed that message. The point is; if you can dream it, then it can happen.

There are so many ideas, questions, answers, and poppycock out there, that I thought I would bring some of this topic "Alternative Energy" together in one forum. My principle love is Music. Wouldn't it be great to discover that sound waves will be the answer to solving our "free energy" quests? When I play my music, everyone has the energy to get up and leave! ha ha

All joking aside, right now I am on a journey to find the answer to this; "Is there another way to split Hydrogen from Oxygen other than through electrolysis"? And in searching for that answer (not found by me yet!) I just corralled up many bits of information about alternative fuel, and energy.

I think the solution to the whole problem is not creating free energy, but how to store it and use it later.

This is the best place on the web for free electricity, free energy, and free fuel information. Just remember, nothing is really for free.

Kanye West

I think the performance Kanye gave on SNL was great. I think other artist's paid attention to the two giant screens and the animation (story) that was being told as he sang. Now, some of you say he was lip-syncing. Maybe so. So what? If this turns out to be something where he is not even singing the real song (like Milli Vanilli), well then send him to jail! Not.

He's a performer first, a singer second. Great performance Kanye!

Pyramid Sequencer

The Pyramid Sequencer:

Wake up Nintendo DS and all that are interested in breaking the bank in music (Sony, Wii?)

I love the new Nintendo DS Korg Synthesizer. That said, I also love making music. I usually make it through writing notes, scoring it, and through some magic, it comes out the shoot (never quite like I intended mind you).

I have an idea for the game makers. Start setting up music like a pyramid. Let each block be “editable”. Here is why. A normal man can look at blocks. To make music, he has to look at blocks and decide how long or short the sound. That is where the roadblock in music exists! If you know me, then you know about roadblocks... I overcome them. And so do you!

I don't want to get too far past the average person interested in music with tech talk. But, I have to say to the pro's, each pyramid block can be a “backstage” to the quarter note (or 32nd note if you're that far inclined). Thus allowing for overlapping in the tracks.

Okay, back to Earth...

When I am scoring music, I am usually interested in creating the melody. Melody consists of different lengths of sound. I also concern myself with pitch, chord etc. That is what all composers of music do when they play an instrument.

The Computer has become an instrument of music. For it to evolve properly, we must do two things. One, we must make it easy for people to understand. Two, we must make it uniquely better than any instrument that has come before.

Well, the pro's know much about number two. As for number one? The Pyramid.

A half note by any other name is still a half note. And half of a pyramid block is still half a note.

The advancement, enhancement, enticement, romancement, is that each block contains a sound from anything, INCLUDING... the singer.

And with the Pyramid scheme (aren't those illegal?) I have come up with, we can all start making sweet music together.

Here's the picture worth a thousand words. I don't have the time or desire to embark on this project. Go to it Geeks!

Remember in your minds; that the bottom of the Pyramid should be allowed to overlap in the sequencer, BUT make it adjustable or fade in fade out if you will.

The Compusician

Cubase, Magix, Pro Tools...

An idea for sequencer manufacturers such as Magix, Pro Tools, Cubase, etc...

I just finished working on another project that took months to complete. One problem I ran into was locating my notes for amplifier settings, pitch settings, settings, settings, lyrics, and settings...

Wouldn't it be great if there were a way to make “sticky notes” (yellow of course), and I could stick them anywhere on my sequencer! Maybe it would be a small yellow square with the letter “S” to show that there is a note there, and then it expands to show the full note when I click on it?

Just an idea.

Thanks, Gary Ruff, The Compusician

PS Maybe I should have sold this as a program for 3M corporation, but for now it is free for the world to expand upon...

PS That is where the money would be... make electronic sticky notes to work with all programs as an app! Active X, or how about VST? Vst is an odd idea, but perhaps as an overlay (layered over the sequencer screen, set everything else to “clear” or “matching background”, then order up “sticky notes” when asked for in the tool bar?

There's one hell of an app! I don't ask for anything but perhaps some bread crumbs from the kind programmer that takes on this idea (and a million bucks if it ever comes to spare). I've been drinking and I'm out of my mind.
