Hooking to the grid...
You can sell your solar energy you make, wind power, or any other type of energy to the power company. Why would you want to do this? Because instead of having batteries to store your electricy the solar panels made during the day time, you just buy back your power you sold to the electric company.
Of course, if you make more than you use, you might actually make a profit, but it is unlikely.
As America grows and starts using more and more electric cars, there will be a greater demand for electricity (and less demand for oil!).
If everyone in your community had some small solar power panels, wind power generators, and/or water (hydro electric) systems imagine how much better off you and your community would be (and perhaps turning a profit).
It all starts with one person. Maybe you can build a simple system just to run you lights at night (a stand alone system).
Here is a link for some great ideas, and iformation on how to make your own electricity. LINK: http://www.house-energy.com/Wind/On-Grid.htm
